Document Preparation

The Court recommends that the proper .pdf, .txt and MS Word .doc or .docx (for order upload) files be prepared prior to accessing CM/ECF.  When creating a document to be filed electronically, it is recommended that the users search for the availability of an event code by accessing the "Search" menu option located on the CM/ECF blue menu bar.  Every effort must be made to match the title of the document being filed to the event code identified.  If an event code is not available or cannot be located via this search feature, please contact the ECF Help Desk at (213) 894-2365 or via email at ECF_Support@cacb.uscourts.gov.

All documents and claims (except proposed orders which must be in MS Word format) filed electronically on CM/ECF must be in .pdf format.  Users should preview the .pdf document for accuracy (including signatures) and proper format before transmitting it to the court.

  • PDF document files shall not be larger than 50 megabytes (MB) in size.
  • The pdf page size for individual pages of the document shall not be larger than 8.5  x 11 inches. PDF files with pages exceeding the 8.5 x 11 inch limit must be modified before uploading.
  • A .pdf may be split into several attachments as long as each attachment is not larger than the 50 MB limit (maximun merge document size is 90MB).
  • Contact the ECF Help Desk if you are having a problem submitting a document with a large number of attachments.
